Rost Busts Pfizer and Journalists

Pfizer is proudly touting a new observational study which found that patients who switched from Lipitor to a generic medication had an increased risk of heart problems. Fantastic -- avoid the generic and use Lipitor. Oh, but wait, as Peter Rost points out...

There is only one teeny weeny problem. The most common reason for switching drugs is because the therapy doesn't work; when the drugs don't have the desired effect. So it is completely expected that patients who were forced to switch had a worse outcome. They may simply be treatment resistant.

And Pfizer knows this.

That's the reason they use a weasel-sentence in their press release, hidden deep inside the text, saying "As with all observational studies, the findings should be regarded as hypothesis generating."

But that has not stopped the so-called health media from running with the story from the Lipitor saves, generics kill angle (see several sources on Rost's site). Here's more fuel for the fire:

"The bottom line on this particular study is that the data tell us such switching may not be without consequences," said Michael Berelowitz, senior vice president of Pfizer's global medical division, in a phone interview.

With all due respect, Mr. Berelowitz, it would appear that you are either ignorant on this point or you are lying. An analogy in the mental health field would be if patients who tried Effexor and then switched to a generic tricyclic antidepressant (say, imipramine) were found to have worse depression outcomes than patients who stayed on Effexor. Duh! Again, maybe people who dropped Effexor are treatment-resistant and/or had more severe depression -- medications don't work as well for them. So it would be a pretty stupid comparison to say that those who switched antidepressants were acting dangerously by switching medications, wouldn't it?

Pimping One's Blog Or Doing One's Duty?

I’ll open this post with some context. I really think John Mack has done great work at the Pharma Blogosphere and Pharma Marketing Blog sites However, that does not mean I always agree with his arguments. I’m not putting up this post in an attempt to start a “cat fight” with the good Mr. Mack; I just have to express my dissent.

Many bloggers linked to Peter Rost’s blog last week, and with damn good reason. He posted an excellent three-part series regarding a Pfizer whistleblower. And, making it yet more interesting, voodoo was allegedly involved. Mack took issue with bloggers linking to Rost, pointing out (accurately) that most who linked to Rost had little to add. I linked to Rost and admit that I added nothing to Rost’s story. Mack then stated that the reason fellow bloggers linked to Rost was because they wanted to increase their visibility, as Rost was nice enough to link back to sites that posted links to his site.

Well, allow me to differ. Do I like getting a little added traffic from Rost? You bet – I’ll take all the traffic I can get. But that is not the main reason I linked the story. I linked it because it is interesting and because I thought my readers should be exposed to it. The more exposure such a story gets, the better. After all, it appears that one thing that many pharma-related sites have in common is to shine light on dubious industry practices. Thus, I see linking to a blogger who is doing good investigative work as a large part of my blogging duties. Am I missing something?

Rost Busts Pfizer... Again and Again and Again

Rost continues to bring the hammer down on Pfizer. I won't even bother to summarize his work, suffice to say that it involves a combination of...
  • Spying
  • Bribery
  • Money laundering
  • Retaliation toward a Pfizer whistleblower
  • VOODOO
The investigation is up in three parts and you're a fool to not read it.
Part one. Part two. Part three.

Enjoy.

Peter Rost is ON FIRE!

I bow down to Peter Rost. Why? Let's see... He broke the latest AstraZeneca Arimidex off-label marketing scandal. Rather than being a one-time story, it has continued to unfold, looking worse and worse for AZ. Rost continues to serve up hot AZ insider information, as the scandal grows wider in scope. He has also backed up his brand of investigative journalism with evidence (here and here) that points quite directly at AZ marketing their product in an off-label fashion. And the plot continues to thicken, as you can see here.

Keep up the good work Peter!

AZ: The Plot Thickens

The gang of seven concerned employees as AstraZeneca march forward with more details concerning their allegations of off-label marketing. This one could really blow up into something large, if the facts are straight. Check out the latest from Brandweek NRX and Peter Rost.

Lest you forget, AZ also makes Seroquel, and the lawsuits have already begun about the, um, liberal, marketing of that product. More on Seroquel's ever-expanding market here and here.

Rost Vindicated, Pfizer Slapped

Jim Edwards of Brandweek NRX called it. Peter Rost has talked about it for years. Pfizer pushed their human growth hormone product, Genotropin off-label, and has now settled a lawsuit for the sum of about $35 million. Big props to Rost for his excellent whistleblowing on this issue. I expect he'll have celebratory T-shirts and coffee mugs released by the end of the week!

Peter Rost Jumps on J & J's Blogger Party

The good Dr. Peter Rost has commented on the J & J blogger event that I discussed yesterday. I agree with his take on what would happen if every J & J employee started "freely" blogging:
Here's the deal. If 120,000 employees each get a blog from their employer, that employer will know exactly what those 120,000 employees are saying. Does anyone think for a second that they will say aaaaaaaaaaanything critical? Of course not. Instead you'll have the Internet flooded with happy little messages about the company they work for.
Yep, couldn't agree more. Next up: Lilly opens up the Zyprexa Off-Label Blog and AstraZeneca starts the Seroquel Lawsuit Chatline. This will occur shortly after George Bush and Dick Cheney start the Weapons of Mass Destruction -- Lies R Us site.

I'm open to more ideas...
